Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5)

Skincare ingredient, decoded — every claim sourced.

What it is

A water-attracting, barrier-soothing ingredient that helps skin hold moisture and feel calmer and smoother.

How it works

When applied to skin, panthenol is absorbed into the surface layer (stratum corneum) and converted to pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), a building block of coenzyme A that supports the normal function of the skin's surface (epithelial) cells. It works in two complementary ways: as a humectant it draws and holds water in the upper skin, and as a barrier supporter it helps reduce transepidermal water loss so that moisture stays in. This combination is consistent with why it can leave the look and feel of stressed or dry skin calmer, softer and more hydrated, and why surface feel and smoothness tend to improve over continued use.

Who should take care

Almost no one needs to avoid it; it is well tolerated even on sensitive and stressed skin. As with any ingredient, rare allergic contact reactions are possible, so anyone with a known panthenol or pantothenic-acid allergy should skip it, and discontinue use if redness or itching appears.
