Allantoin

Skincare ingredient, decoded — every claim sourced.

What it is

A gentle soothing and skin-conditioning ingredient that helps calm and protect the skin's surface and supports a smoother, softer feel.

How it works

Allantoin works through several mild, complementary routes rather than one strong action. As a gentle exfoliant it helps loosen the bonds (desmosomes) between dead surface cells, supporting the skin's natural shedding of its outer layer (stratum corneum) so the surface feels smoother. It also conditions like a humectant: it increases the water-binding capacity of keratin and the intercellular matrix, which improves the look and feel of hydration and softness. It is widely described as supporting the skin's natural renewal and a comforted, well-conditioned surface. Its soothing, anti-irritant character comes partly from its ability to form complexes with and neutralize various irritating substances, which helps skin feel calmer. These are cosmetic skin-conditioning effects on the appearance and feel of the skin.

Who should take care

Allantoin is one of the best-tolerated cosmetic ingredients and suits sensitive, reactive, and compromised skin; the CIR Expert Panel concluded it is safe as used, with no eye or skin irritation, phototoxicity, mutagenicity, or carcinogenicity at reviewed levels. Few people need to avoid it. The only practical reasons to skip a given product are a rare specific allergy to allantoin itself, or a poorly formulated product where it has crystallized or precipitated out of solution (a formulation issue, not an ingredient risk). As with any cosmetic product, if you are applying it to broken skin or have a skin concern that is not improving, consult a doctor.
